Until the reign of Nobunaga, the temple was the lodging house of various figures, including the 13th Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru, Oda Nobunaga, and Date Masamune, and tea ceremonies were held there by Sen no Rikyu. Among them, Oda Nobunaga was the most frequent guest of Myokakuji Temple, staying there 18 times out of the 20 or so times Nobunaga visited Kyoto.
