It’s a guided tour of the Kyoto Nishijin area and Imamiya Shrine, along with a dyeing workshop, scheduled for Monday, October 16, 2023.
We will explore the renowned Imamiya Shrine, a symbol of Nishijin, and visit Daikaku-ji temple. Additionally, there will be a workshop where you can experience multiple-layer dyeing.
While learning the artisan’s creative process and compositional thinking, we will create handkerchiefs and hand towels. The workshop venue, a dyeing studio, employs a unique technique called ’ikuezome’ and engages in both artisanal and artistic work.

Yutaka Ohue (Dyeing Artisan)
In 1973, I began my apprenticeship at a dyeing workshop and became independent in 1976. After gaining independence, I was inspired by the teachings of a master as a craftsman and artist to pursue a unique expression technique that only I could achieve. In 2000, I presented my first work using the “ikemusen” (layered dyeing) technique. Since then, I have consistently continued to create artworks up to the present day.
